Habitat and Description: Fruit glaucous blue; common large shrub or small tree to 10 ft. tall; in woodland transitional between mesquite savanna on Permian strata and juniper-oak woodland on Cretaceous limestone. Soils: deep, gently sloping, well drained, calcareous, moderately alkaline, loamy Typic Ustochrepts (Shep Series) and clay loam Typic Calciustolls (Quanah Series). Geology: mudstones, etc. of Clear Fork Group (Permian). Woody associates include Berberis trifoliolata, Celtis reticulata, Cocculus carolinus, Ephedra antisyphilitica, Forestiera pubescens, Juniperus pinchotii, Mimosa biuncifera, Opuntia lindheimeri, Prosopis glandulosa, Prunus sp., Rhus microphylla, Rhus trilobata, Sapindus saponaria var. drummondii, Smilax bona-nox, Yucca constricta, Zanthoxylum hirsutum.
