Habitat and Description: Common (but less common than S. tenerum) in grassy diverse ground layer of fire-maintained pine savanna on poorly to moderately well drained, strongly acid, very fine sandy loam over Beaumont Formation, level upland. Associates include Andropogon gerardii, Aristida longespica, A. purpurascens, Bigelowia nuttallii, Boltonia diffusa, Eryngium yuccifolium, Eupatorium rotundifolium, Heleastrum hemisphaericum, Helianthus angustifolius, Liatris acidota, L. aspera, L. squarrulosa, Manfreda virginica, Oxypolis rigidior, Panicum anceps, P. virgatum, Paspalum floridanum, P. setaceum, Pityopsis graminifolia, Polypremum procumbens, Pycnanthemum albescens, P. tenuifolia, Rhynchospora sp., Schizachyrium tenerum, Scleria reticularis, Solidago nitida, S. odora.
