Habitat and Description: Steep slopes, growing in decomposed leaf matter on top of boulders. Truce Stony Soils, 5-20% slopes. Associates include Elymus canadensis, Ulmus crassifolia, Quercus shumardii, Dicanthelium oligosanthes, Chasmanthium latifolium, Viburnum rufidulum, Pellaea atropurpurea, and Cheilanthes tomentosa. Uncommon.
