Habitat and Description: Tall shrub or small tree, uncommon on slopes in arid Edward's Plateau. Specimen in south Texas: calcareous thornscrub community with some Juniperus ashei present. Specimen on thin clay loam soil over rocky limestone. Plant associations include: Acacia berlandieri, Juniperus ashei, Leucophyllum frutescens, Bouteloua curtipendula, Cynanchum barbigerum, Aristida purpurea, Opuntia engelmannii var. lindheimeri, Agave lechuguilla, Echinocereus enneacanthus.
